North DFW Estate Wedding Venues: The Three I Have Actually Shot

The North DFW estate venues I can speak to firsthand are Hillside Estate, Knotting Hill Place and The Olana in Hickory Creek, because those three are the ones I have shot on my own bookings. The Olana’s rental runs $10,500 to $22,000. Most DFW venues price Monday through Thursday below a Saturday, and that is the single biggest lever you have on venue cost out here. I am based in Denton with no travel fee anywhere in greater DFW, so all three are a normal drive for me.
If you just got engaged and you are about to start touring the estates up here, first off, congratulations!!! This stretch of Denton and Collin County has more chateau-looking buildings per square mile than anywhere else in Texas, and touring them is genuinely fun.
But I want to be straight with you about what this post is. I have shot 350+ weddings since November 2019, when I shot my first one second shooting at the White Sparrow Barn, and I have still only stood inside a fraction of the venues up here. So this is not a ranked list of every estate in North Texas; it is the three I know with my own camera, plus the questions I would ask on a tour of any of them.
A venue guide is only worth reading if the person writing it has worked the room, and most of the estate roundups you will find were written by somebody who has never carried a camera up those stairs.
Which North DFW estate venues have I actually photographed?
Hillside Estate
Hillside Estate is the one I can show you instead of describe. I photographed Merin and Jaison’s wedding there, and the whole thing is published: Merin and Jaison at Hillside Estate. Go look at that before you read another word of anybody’s opinion, mine included.
And that is my actual advice for touring this whole belt: ask every photographer you talk to for one full wedding gallery at the venue you are considering, not a portfolio. Not their best 40 frames from 40 different days; one day, start to finish. A full gallery tells you how someone handles the light at 3PM and at 10PM in the same building, which is the only thing that matters once you have signed.
The Olana
The Olana sits in Hickory Creek, in Denton County, and the rental runs $10,500 to $22,000. Two things I will say about it as a photographer, both earned the boring way: it is the best getting ready room I have ever shot in, and it is the one reception space in DFW I will name where the daytime light is bright enough that I do not need flash.
I shot a styled shoot there on my own, published as The Olana styled shoot preview, and I have worked 40 to 50 weddings in that building, most of them not my own bookings, which is why you will not find all of them in my portfolio.
One honest warning, because it is the thing couples plan around: the lower grand staircase does not photograph as well as it looks on a tour. The light in there is not great and the colors are not my favorite. The spiral staircase on the third floor is one of my favorite spots in any DFW venue, because light FLOODS into that part of the building, the colors look right and the angles are awesome. If you are at The Olana, spend your staircase minutes on the third floor.
Knotting Hill Place
Knotting Hill Place is the third one I have shot on my own bookings, and my venue notes are in the Knotting Hill Place guide.
I am not going to quote you a rental range for it here. Venue pricing moves by day, season and package, and a number in a photographer’s blog post is the worst possible source for it. Ask the venue directly, get it in writing, and ask them specifically what a Monday through Thursday date does to that number.
What does a North DFW estate wedding cost?
The only venue rental figure I will put my name to is The Olana’s, at $10,500 to $22,000, and that is rental, before catering and before anything else. Everything else up here moves around too much for me to quote responsibly, which is why this post has fewer numbers in it than the roundups you have been reading.
BUT, here is the lever almost nobody pulls: most DFW venues have a lower Monday through Thursday rate. Most of them. If your guest list can handle a weekday, the venue line on your budget moves more than any other single decision you will make.
My side of the budget is public, all of it, on the pricing page:
- Archive, $5,200. 8 hours, one photographer.
- Estate, $6,000. 8 hours, two photographers, engagement session.
- Legacy, $6,800. 10 hours, two photographers, engagement or bridal session, film.
- Heritage, $9,000. All day, two photographers, engagement and bridal, film, and a physical album.
The second photographer is included from Estate up, not an add-on you get surprised by later. And I am in Denton with no travel fee anywhere in greater DFW, so the estate belt costs you nothing extra in mileage 馃檪
How many hours of coverage do you need at an estate venue?
I recommend 10 hours. Most of my couples book 10 and about 30% book 8, and 8 can be tight at a big property.
The math is not intuitive, so here it is. You do not build coverage forward from getting ready, you build it backwards from the exit. The DFW receptions I shoot usually end around 11PM. So an 11PM exit on an 8 hour package means I start at 3PM, and most of your morning happens before I am there. At an estate venue that hurts more than usual, because the getting ready suites are half of why you booked the place.
The hour by hour version is in my wedding day timeline guide.
Which estate venue has the best light for photos?
During the day, The Olana, and it is the only DFW reception space I will name that way.
After sunset, no estate in North Texas is handing you a lit ceremony. To be honest, there is no ceremony space in DFW I would name where the ambient light alone was enough for vows. For an outdoor ceremony that runs past sunset I work on camera bounce flash so I am not the obnoxious guy standing in your aisle, and it works everywhere, which is sort of the point.
For sunset portraits I want 20 minutes, 30 if you can give me 30. If all you can spare is 10, I will be efficient with the 10. But the frames couples actually print large are the portraits right after the first look and the sunset portraits, so those 20 minutes are the ones I will fight your timeline for.
What should you ask on an estate venue tour?
- What time does the getting ready suite open? 10AM and 2PM are two completely different wedding days.
- What is the Monday through Thursday rate compared to the Saturday rate?
- Where does the sun set relative to the ceremony site? I have never once had a tour guide volunteer this lol.
- If it rains, where do portraits happen? Not where dinner moves. Portraits.
- Is another event running on the property that day, and how do you keep the portrait spots separate?
- What is the outside vendor policy, in writing, in the contract rather than in conversation?
To be clear, these questions are not for me. I have shot most DFW venues and I find locations fast, so I do not need much scouting; for a private property I will walk it if you offer, and otherwise I get there about an hour early on the day. The answers change your timeline, not my job.
Questions I get about North DFW estate venues
How much does it cost to rent The Olana for a wedding?
The rental at The Olana in Hickory Creek runs $10,500 to $22,000. That is the venue rental only, before catering, bar, florals, music or photography. Like most DFW venues, the day of the week moves the number, so ask what a Monday through Thursday date does to it before you commit to a Saturday.
Can I bring my own photographer to a North DFW estate venue?
At the three I shoot on my own bookings, Hillside Estate, Knotting Hill Place and The Olana, yes, because I am the outside photographer. Vendor rules do change, so get your venue’s current policy in writing and in the contract rather than taking a tour guide’s word or a blog post’s word for it.
Are weekday weddings cheaper at DFW venues?
Usually. Most DFW venues have a lower Monday through Thursday rate than a Saturday, and it is the biggest single lever on the venue line of your budget. I do not charge differently by day of week and there is no travel fee anywhere in greater DFW, so a weekday costs you less overall, not more.
Which DFW venue has the best light for wedding photos?
The Olana during the day. It is the one reception space in Dallas Fort Worth I will name where the natural light is bright enough that I can shoot without flash. After sunset, no DFW venue gives you enough ambient light for vows, so plan on your photographer using flash outdoors after dark anywhere out here.
What I would tell you
You cannot really make a bad choice among buildings this pretty. Pick the room that fits your people, book the weekday if you can stomach the conversation with your guest list, and protect 20 minutes at sunset. That is the entire guide!!!
If you are touring up here and want to know how I would shoot a specific one, let me know if you want to look at dates. If not then no worries!
