The Olana Hickory Creek Styled Shoot Preview: Editorial Bridal at a DFW Venue

If you’re a DFW couple looking at The Olana in Hickory Creek as your potential wedding venue, or you’re a photographer / planner who’s curious what editorial bridal frames from here look like, this is the styled-shoot preview I promised on Instagram three weeks ago. Six film-look editorial frames from a small-team session at The Olana. Full venue notes below.
If you’re already thinking about booking here, this post gives you the honest photographer-side breakdown. If not then no worries!
Why The Olana is a DFW hidden gem
The Olana sits in Hickory Creek, about 35 minutes north of downtown Dallas off I-35. It’s a European-inspired venue with a chapel, a garden ceremony option, and a manicured grounds that shoot beautifully for both wedding portraits and editorial bridal.
Compared to other DFW venues:
- vs. Hillside Estate: Olana is smaller and more European-manor in feel. Hillside is bigger and more of a modern-farm aesthetic.
- vs. Arlington Hall: Olana has more architectural interest for portraits. Arlington Hall has more classic-Southern manor energy.
- vs. Marie Gabrielle: Olana is more affordable per guest. Marie Gabrielle is more urban.
- vs. Flying V Ranch: Olana is more traditional, Flying V more rustic.
Why I chose The Olana for this styled shoot
Real answer: because I’ve shot Jillian Enderby’s actual bridals here in February (linked at the bottom) and I knew the light. Styled shoots work best when the photographer has been on-site before; you’re not wasting the first hour figuring out where the good backgrounds live.
Specifically, The Olana has THREE editorial-caliber backdrops within a 3-minute walk:
- The east chapel wall. Ivy-covered stone. Gets north-facing shade all day. This is where the 1093260-R1-008 and 1093260-R1-018 frames were shot.
- The main courtyard fountain. European-plaza feel. Best light at 3-4pm when the sun is behind the main house.
- The formal garden path. Symmetrical, framed by tall hedges. Best late afternoon. This is where I did the wider bridal editorial frames.
Editorial bridal: what “editorial” actually means at a venue like The Olana
If a bride or a planner says “I want editorial photos,” what they usually mean is:
- Slower shutter, more intentional composition
- Closer crops, more architectural framing
- Film-look color grading (warm-neutral, softer highlights)
- Less “smile at the camera,” more “look off into the middle distance and breathe”
Editorial bridal is NOT more posed than a regular bridal session; it’s actually less posed. It’s about creating the CONDITIONS for the subject to exist in the frame, then capturing that.
For this styled shoot at The Olana, I shot on film-simulation profiles with a warm-neutral grade. The Evoto Color pass added subtle film grain to bring the images closer to actual film-scan look. Which, since we ALSO shot some frames on actual 35mm film (the 1093260 series is from a scanned roll), the two matched cleanly.
What to know if you’re planning a wedding at The Olana
Getting-ready: the on-site bridal suite is small but well-lit. Southern-facing windows. If you’re getting ready here, ask your photographer to shoot near the window early in the day.
Ceremony: indoor chapel or outdoor garden. Both are photographable in any weather. Outdoor is prettier when the weather cooperates; indoor is more consistent.
Reception: the reception hall is on the east side. Warm overhead lighting; ask your DJ to bring uplights if you want more mood in reception photos.
Coordinator: required. Standard for DFW venues at this tier.
Parking: on-site, ample.
Sunset: for a fall or spring wedding, plan portraits 45 minutes before sunset. Fall gives you 5:30-6:00pm; spring/summer 7:30-8:00pm.

Would I recommend The Olana for your wedding?
If you want a wedding venue that:
- Feels intimate but photographable
- Sits in a quieter DFW neighborhood
- Offers both indoor and outdoor ceremony
- Has genuinely good architectural detail for portraits
Then YES. The Olana is on my top-5 DFW wedding venue list.
If you want a bigger venue, urban energy, or a downtown-Dallas backdrop, look at Marie Gabrielle, Empire Room, or The Shops at Wedding Square instead. Different vibes.
Cost of a DFW wedding photographer at The Olana

The Olana vs. other DFW wedding venues: honest comparison
Because I’ve now shot at all of these, here’s the honest tradeoff table:
| Consideration | The Olana | Hillside Estate | Arlington Hall | Marie Gabrielle |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guest capacity | 150 max | 250 max | 200 max | 350 max |
| Ceremony style | European chapel + garden | Modern arch + oak tree | Southern manor lawn | Urban warehouse |
| Rain plan | Excellent (indoor chapel) | Good (covered porch) | Excellent (indoor hall) | Excellent |
| Photo variety | High (garden + architecture) | Very high (oak + fields) | Medium (formal only) | Medium (industrial) |
| Vendor rules | In-house list | Preferred vendors | Preferred vendors | Preferred vendors |
| Best for | Intimate European feel | Big group + outdoor | Classic Southern elegance | Urban editorial |
| Price tier | $$ | $$$ | $$$ | $$$$ |
If you want a wedding that FEELS European without a passport, The Olana is your answer. If you want big + outdoor + Instagrammable, Hillside. If you want Old Dallas prestige, Arlington Hall. If you want downtown urban, Marie Gabrielle.

If you’re another DFW photographer scouting The Olana for the first time, save yourself the mistakes I made on my first shoot there:
Bring a longer lens than you think you need. The 85mm is essential for the chapel-wall ivy portraits. The 35mm handles wide venue-establishing shots. I skipped the 24-70 zoom here; the fixed primes are cleaner in this venue’s shadow-heavy areas.
Watch for lens flare at 3-4pm. The main courtyard fountain sits directly west of the primary portrait wall. Between 3-4pm the sun kicks off the water into your lens. Either shoot AWAY from the fountain or LEAN INTO the flare; no in-between works.
The chapel is DIMMER than it photographs. ISO 1600 minimum for handheld inside. Their sconces read warm; set custom WB before ceremony.
Prep your Evoto profile. I run all Olana shots through the same warm-neutral Evoto Color preset because the venue’s stone naturally goes cool-toned.
What editorial bridals cost in DFW
While we’re here, my editorial bridal session starts at $650 and includes a 90-minute session, 40+ edited images, and a private online gallery. Most brides book this AFTER buying the dress but BEFORE the wedding, so we can shoot bridals as a full editorial session in a different location than the wedding venue.
Editorial bridals at The Olana specifically run $800 because we’re booking the venue for the session, vs. shooting at, say, White Rock Lake (free public access, no venue fee added to the shoot).
