Golden Hour Timeline Math for a DFW Wedding

Short answer: plan 20 minutes for sunset portraits, 30 if you can give them to me, and build the rest of the day backwards from your exit, not forwards from getting ready. The DFW receptions I shoot usually end around 11PM, so an 11PM exit on 8 hours of coverage means a 3PM start. Your ceremony time is the one decision that sets where the light lands, and it is a lot easier to move it by 30 minutes now than to chase the light on the day.

I have shot 350+ weddings and this is still the conversation I have the strongest opinions about; it shapes how your photos look more than the venue does.

How do I build my wedding timeline around sunset?

Backwards from the exit. That is the whole method.

So if your reception ends at 11PM, here is what that looks like:

  • 8 hours of coverage, 11PM exit: I start at 3PM.
  • 10 hours of coverage, 11PM exit: I start at 1PM.

Then the light gets laid on top of that. And I pull sunset times from Google and from having shot that same week of the year over and over; I do not use a planning app.

If you want the full hour by hour version of what goes where inside those coverage hours, I wrote that one out here: wedding day timeline, hour by hour.

What time is sunset in Dallas, month by month?

These are Dallas sunset times for 2026. Each line runs the 1st of the month to the last day, then the mid month time, so you can see it drift. The latest sunset of the year is 8:39PM in late June; the earliest is 5:20PM in early December.

  • January: 5:32PM-5:59PM, mid month 5:44PM
  • February: 5:59PM-6:23PM, mid month 6:12PM
  • March: 6:24PM CST-7:46PM CDT, mid month 7:35PM CDT. The clocks go forward on Sunday 8 March
  • April: 7:47PM-8:08PM, mid month 7:58PM
  • May: 8:09PM-8:29PM, mid month 8:19PM
  • June: 8:30PM-8:39PM, mid month 8:37PM
  • July: 8:39PM-8:26PM, mid month 8:35PM
  • August: 8:25PM-7:53PM, mid month 8:10PM
  • September: 7:51PM-7:12PM, mid month 7:31PM
  • October: 7:11PM-6:36PM CDT, mid month 6:52PM
  • November: 5:36PM-5:20PM, mid month 5:25PM, all CST
  • December: 5:20PM-5:31PM, mid month 5:22PM

Fort Worth is about 2 minutes later than Dallas, which is inside the rounding on any timeline.

How long do sunset portraits actually take?

Twenty minutes. Thirty if the day can give them to me, and if all you have is 10, I will just be efficient with the 10.

The frames my couples print large, the ones that end up over the couch, are almost always the portraits right after the first look and the sunset portraits. Not the big wide reception shot, not the walk back up the aisle. Those two.

What time should my ceremony start?

The honest answer is that the ceremony start decides everything downstream, so pick it around the light and the heat rather than the dinner reservation.

In July or August, the latest outdoor ceremony I will push for is about 15 minutes before sunset, because a DFW summer afternoon is genuinely dangerous for a wedding party standing in it. I have seen heat exhaustion at weddings more than once and I carry cold water for exactly that reason. BUT, I always defer to you. It is your ceremony and I will shoot it at 2PM in August if that is what you want, I will just tell you the truth about it first.

The other end of the range is a noon ceremony, and that is the earliest start I have actually had to work around in DFW. Church slots do that. We shot portraits right afterward, which is the right move, because there is no reason to make everyone stand around waiting for better light. BUT, noon buys you a long gap before the light is any good; in mid October sunset lands around 6:52PM, so that is close to seven hours between your ceremony and your best 20 minutes of the day. Worth knowing before you pick coverage hours, because either we come back out at sunset or we do not get those frames at all.

What buffers do I actually need in a wedding timeline?

Fewer than most timelines assume, and in different places.

  • 15 minutes before the ceremony for me to get set up.
  • Straight into photos after the recessional. Family, then the two of you, then the wedding party, if you are up for it. No long dead zone.
  • About 10 minutes before the reception opens for bustling the dress and lining up the entrances.

Family formals are where a timeline actually goes sideways. The average is 20 to 30 minutes, and I recommend you budget 15 to 20 max. I call the names myself, largest group down to the smallest, so nobody is standing there with a list looking for a cousin. What blows it up is one missing grandparent, or people wandering off between groups; it is almost never the number of groupings.

Does daylight saving really mess up a fall wedding timeline?

It can, and it has, once.

I had a fall couple whose date fell on the wrong side of the clock change, and the sunset they had been planning around all year was suddenly an hour earlier on the clock than they thought. What we did was move the first looks as early as we possibly could and get the couple portraits, the wedding party and the family done before the ceremony instead of after. It worked.

Here is the 2026 version with the numbers on it. Sunset on Saturday 31 October is 6:36PM CDT. Sunset the next day, Sunday 1 November, is 5:36PM CST. One day apart, an hour apart in usable light. Nothing about the sky changed; the clock did.

May and October are my busiest months, and October is where this bites hardest; the first look decision is usually the lever I reach for first.

Can you photograph a ceremony that starts after sunset?

Yes, and I have. Usually in the fall, usually outdoors, lit by the venue’s string lights and my flash.

For an outdoor ceremony with no light left after sunset, what I use is on camera bounce. Not a bank of lights, not a stand in the aisle, just bounce, because nobody should be aware of me during your vows.

What I cannot do is promise you a DFW ceremony space where the room’s own light is enough for vows after dark. I have not shot one. If someone tells you their venue does not need flash after sunset, ask to see the photos.

Do I need a first look to protect golden hour?

I recommend the first look with your partner, yes. Not because it is trendy, but because it moves your couple portraits earlier in the day and leaves room for newlywed portraits after the ceremony, when you are both relieved and actually loose.

About 20% of my couples also do a first look with dad. It goes right after the bride is ready, it takes 5 to 10 minutes, and most of those minutes are spent finding dad. It is worth it.

On a tight 8 hour timeline though, I will tell you to cut some of the first looks. You cannot do dad, the bridesmaids, the siblings and your partner and still get sunset; something has to give, and I would rather it be a reveal than your portraits.

How many hours of coverage does a light driven timeline need?

I recommend 10 hours. Eight can be tight, and about 30% of my couples book 8 anyway and do fine, usually because they cut a first look or start the day already dressed.

The packages, all on the pricing page because you should not have to book a call to find out what something costs:

  • Archive, $5,200, 8 hours, one photographer.
  • Estate, $6,000, 8 hours, two photographers, engagement session included.
  • Legacy, $6,800, 10 hours, two photographers, engagement or bridal session, film.
  • Heritage, $9,000, all day, two photographers, engagement and bridal, film, and a physical album.

Additional hours booked in advance are $500/h. I do not sell a 6 hour package; 8 is the floor. And if we add time on the day itself, that is overtime at 1.5x the hourly rate on your contract, in whole hours, confirmed in writing by you. I would rather you just book the hour up front 馃檪

We go through all of this on the pre wedding consultation, which runs 30 to 60 minutes on Google Meet or Zoom.

Frequently asked questions about golden hour wedding timelines

What time is golden hour for a Dallas wedding?

Dallas sunset runs from 5:20PM in early December to 8:39PM in late June, so golden hour moves every week. Mid May it is 8:19PM, mid October 6:52PM. I pull times from Google and from experience, not an app. Look up your exact date, then leave 20 to 30 minutes of daylight after your ceremony.

How long do I need for sunset photos on my wedding day?

Twenty minutes, and 30 if your timeline can give it. If all you can give me is 10 minutes, I will be efficient with the 10 and you will still get images. The sunset portraits are one of the two sets my couples print large.

What time should my wedding start if I want an 11PM exit?

Work backwards from the exit. With 8 hours of coverage, an 11PM exit means I start at 3PM. With 10 hours, I start at 1PM. Most DFW receptions I shoot end around 11PM, so this is the most common math I run.

Can a wedding ceremony be photographed after sunset?

Yes. I have shot ceremonies starting at or after sunset, usually in the fall, lit by the venue’s string lights and my flash. For an outdoor ceremony with no light left, I use on camera bounce so I am not intrusive during your vows.

How much time do family formals take at a wedding?

Twenty to 30 minutes is the average, and I recommend budgeting 15 to 20. I call the names myself, largest group to smallest, so nobody is hunting for a list. The two things that blow up formals are a missing grandparent and people wandering off.

The one thing to take from this

Pick your ceremony time off your sunset time, then hand me 20 minutes at the end of the day and let me have them. That is the whole post. Everything else, the buffers, the first looks, the hours, is downstream of those two numbers.

If you have a date and a venue, send them over and I will tell you exactly where sunset lands and what I would change. I am based in Denton and there is no travel fee anywhere in greater DFW, so the answer is the same wherever you are. Let me know if you want to look at dates. If not then no worries!
