Highland Park Village Wedding Photos: Spanish Colonial Backdrop

Highland Park Village is not really a wedding venue in the traditional sense. It’s a Spanish Colonial-style outdoor shopping district that opened in 1931 and it happens to be one of the most photogenic three blocks in Dallas. Which is why couples keep asking me if we can shoot engagement photos there. And why my answer is always: yes, but here’s exactly how we do it right.
I photographed the couple at Highland Park Village last December: 4:30PM meetup during Christmas, walked the arched breezeways, ended at the fountain by blue hour, warm bulbs everywhere, coats and mittens and the softest golden window. It was COLD. And it was one of the top three engagement sessions I shot all year.
Highland Park Village works as a portrait backdrop because the architecture is legitimately beautiful and it’s public, which means you can shoot there without renting the space, as long as you follow a few unwritten rules.
What Highland Park Village actually is
For anyone new to Dallas: Highland Park Village is a historic outdoor shopping center on the corner of Preston Road and Mockingbird Lane. Spanish Colonial architecture: red tile roofs, stucco walls, arched breezeways, wrought iron details, a central fountain, upscale retail. It’s been operating since 1931 and it’s one of the earliest shopping centers of its kind in America.
It’s also, importantly, in the town of Highland Park, which is technically its own municipality, not Dallas proper. Which matters for permit conversations (we’ll get there).
The zones I actually shoot in
- The main breezeway: arched walkways, tile floors, the classic Highland Park Village frame
- The central fountain plaza: the hero backdrop; midday it’s harsh, late afternoon it’s magic
- The individual storefront exteriors: beautiful doorways, iron work, arched entryways
- The parking lot side entries: surprisingly good compression frames with the architecture stacked in the background
- The Christmas lights (November-December): the whole village goes into holiday mode; more on this in a minute
Depending on session length, we can hit 3-4 of these easily in 90 minutes. My engagement sessions are $800 and cover 90 minutes on-site. That’s the sweet spot for a Highland Park Village session: enough to get a real variety without wearing anyone out.
Light by time of day
Highland Park Village has a specific light problem: the walls are cream, the tile roofs are red, and the surrounding trees are mature. Which means:
- Morning (8 to 10AM): shops are opening, foot traffic is low, light is cool. Solid for a quiet shoot
- Midday (11AM to 3PM): bright, harsh, lots of shoppers. Not my preferred window
- 4 to 6PM (October): golden hour proper; storefront bulbs start turning on around 5:30
- Blue hour (right after sunset): my favorite window; the village’s lighting takes over. This is when the images look most like a movie set
- Christmas season (mid-November through early January): everything shifts. The lights turn on around 5PM and the entire village turns into a set

The Christmas lights conversation
Look. If you want the classic Highland Park Village Christmas engagement session: the one where the whole complex is wrapped in white lights and the fountain is lit and there’s a giant tree in the plaza: book me between the last week of November and January 2. That’s the window.
Best specific timing during that window:
- Weeknight evenings, 4:30 to 6:30PM (fewer crowds than weekends)
- Blue hour (typically around 5:15 to 5:45PM in December)
- Avoid the two weekends before Christmas: packed, unshootable
If you’re eyeing a Christmas engagement session, I’ll open my calendar 3-4 months in advance. Book early or you’ll get pushed to January. My winter wedding Dallas photographer piece touches on this season broadly.

The permit reality: please read this
Highland Park Village is privately owned. Which means:
- Casual engagement session, two people plus me, low-key clothing? Generally no problem. I’ve shot dozens. Nobody has stopped us
- Wedding-adjacent shoots: full bridal gown, wedding party, multiple people, a full dress with train? This starts to feel like an event. The village’s security team may ask you to move along, especially during high-traffic hours
- Actual ceremony? No. Highland Park Village doesn’t rent out for ceremonies. Do not plan one here
- Commercial photoshoots (brand shoots, editorials) need permits
The unwritten rules I follow:
- Don’t shoot during peak retail hours if you can avoid it (11AM to 3PM Sat/Sun)
- Don’t block storefront entrances
- Be respectful when asked to move; the shops are the tenants and they matter
- Don’t drag half a dozen assistants + gear stands into the middle of the fountain plaza
Follow those, and I’ve never had a session interrupted.
Highland Park as a broader neighborhood backdrop
If you’re staying in Highland Park proper, we can also shoot:
- Beverly Drive and Preston Road tree-lined residential streets
- Highland Park’s landscaped medians (some of the most beautiful greenery in Dallas)
- The nearby Turtle Creek Park for a natural contrast
- The Perkins Chapel at Highland Park UMC area for wedding-adjacent architecture
For couples getting married elsewhere in Dallas but wanting a Highland Park aesthetic for their engagement shoot, this combination is honestly one of my favorite session pairings. See also: Highland Park wedding photographer for the fuller neighborhood breakdown.
What to wear
Highland Park Village leans neutral, warm, classic. What photographs BEST here:
- Cream, camel, warm tan, deep burgundy, forest green
- Textured fabrics: wool, silk, cashmere
- Boots or clean loafers (you’ll walk on tile and cobbled surfaces)
- A coat for winter (you’ll want it and it photographs GORGEOUSLY under the lights)
What to avoid:
- Pure white: clips harder against the cream walls than you’d think
- Loud primary colors: fights the warm architectural palette
- Anything too casual: the village photographs like it wants you dressed up. Do not fight that

Timeline math for a Highland Park Village session
A standard $800 engagement session with me is 90 minutes and I deliver 60-100 edited images in 2-3 weeks. Here’s what a Highland Park Village session looks like, December edition:
- 4:30PM: meet at Highland Park Village; park in the lot
- 4:30-4:55: main breezeway, outfit one, warmer light
- 4:55-5:15: walk to fountain plaza; blue hour arriving
- 5:15-5:30: quick outfit change in the car
- 5:30-5:55: Christmas lights zone; fountain with reflections
- 5:55-6:00: final cinematic frames as the lights take over completely
That timeline shifts by month. In July we don’t start until 7PM. In October we can start at 5:30. Season matters; see my Dallas engagement locations by season piece for how to think about this across the year.

What Highland Park Village will NOT do
- It will not host your ceremony. Don’t plan one here
- It will not give you a “private” feeling; it’s a public shopping district. There will be shoppers in the frame at some point
- It will not be a spontaneous drop-in on a Saturday afternoon in December. Plan around traffic
Ready to shoot?
If you’re planning an engagement session at Highland Park Village and want me to build the session around the exact time of year and time of day, send me a message with your target date. December sessions especially need to be booked 3-4 months in advance. If not then no worries! There are a bunch of other Dallas backdrop posts coming in this series.
To be honest, Highland Park Village is one of the last locations where you can get a session that looks European without actually going to Europe. The Spanish Colonial bones, the arched breezeways, the way the storefront bulbs turn on right at blue hour; it’s a package deal. And couples who love that aesthetic keep coming back for holiday portraits, anniversary photos, family shoots. The village keeps showing up. Which is exactly why it’s on the short list every single season!!!
